I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said, “Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments.” — DANIEL 9:4
Daniel’s prayer gives rich insight into the nature and practice of God-honoring prayer. Daniel’s focus is toward the Lord, or Yahweh, using the name of God that speaks of His relationship to His people. Daniel knew he could approach God because he was a child of God. Daniel had a personal relationship with God. Daniel quickly confesses that he believes in the God who is revealed in Scripture, that he believes in what God has revealed about Himself.

Before communicating any request, Daniel is moved to express his heart of adoration to God, who is superior to any human, whose acts of redemption, compassion, goodness, and judgment bring Him due reverence and honor. As Daniel surveys God’s works in relation to his frail humanity, as he thinks upon God’s greatness and power, it produces awe and wonder in his heart.
Sometimes we think that prayer is only requesting things from God, but some of the greatest joys of prayer are those moments in which we simply praise Him. Daniel was not reciting facts about God without believing and cherishing them. His whole heart was involved, as he had come to worship this great God that he now sought in prayer. Whenever you come to see something amazing or wonderful about God, take a moment to praise Him. And whenever you have an urge in your prayer life to proclaim His greatness, obey it!
