Honduras has one of the highest percentages of hunger in Latin America. Just by walking along the city streets you can clearly see that hunger ravages our country. As believers, however, we recognize that there exists an even greater need in our country, a need that Christ articulated to a different generation nearly two thousand years ago.

The people in Christ’s day, as in every generation, had a desperate need for a Savior—one who could give life to their dead and dying souls. What they didn’t understand, and what today’s generation doesn’t understand, is that our greatest need is not physical but spiritual food, food that is capable of creating and sustaining eternal life!

During Christ’s public ministry, many followed Him simply to have their bellies filled or to see what kind of miracle He would do next. Why do you follow Christ? Are you simply seeking for temporal blessings to feed the desires of your physical body, or do you seek the spiritual nourishment that only He can give?

When Christ said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven,” He was declaring His deity, His superiority, His unique prerogative to create and sustain life. The greatest need in the world today is not physical bread but Christ, the bread of eternal life. No matter the country, the need is the same. Let us proclaim the only hope to a spiritually starving world: that God has sent bread from heaven, Jesus Christ, through whom man can be sustained eternally.
