But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. — JAMES 3:17
God loves to give believers heavenly wisdom when they ask for it (James 1:5). This wisdom is essential to live a life for God’s glory, and for pursuing righteousness and honor. It enables believers to successfully pass through the trials of life and to have discernment to recognize what is good and evil.

There are two, and only two, kinds of wisdom: earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom. They have great differences. As James describes them, he desires his readers to examine which one they possess.
Earthly wisdom is evil, self-centered, filled with bitter jealousy, selfish in ambition, and arrogant. This is the wisdom that characterizes the lives of unbelievers. Sadly, sometimes Christians can even fall back into this wisdom. This wisdom does not produce fruit that pleases God.
On the other hand, God loves to give believers heavenly wisdom when they ask for it (James 1:5). This wisdom is essential to live a life for God’s glory, and for pursuing righteousness and honor. It enables believers to successfully pass through the trials of life and to have discernment to recognize what is good and evil.
What is this heavenly wisdom? It is first pure, especially in its motives. Pure motives are sincere and moral. It is peaceable—it promotes and loves peace, and turns someone into a peacemaker. It is gentle, demonstrating itself in restraint, meekness, patience, and tenderness. Wisdom from above is also reasonable. This describes someone who understands others, who is kind-hearted, teachable, and approachable. This wisdom is also full of mercy. It cares for people who suffer and is always ready to forgive just like God. It is also full of good fruits and stable in relationships. Finally, it is without hypocrisy, meaning it produces honesty and sincerity.
As you gaze into the mirror of the word, which wisdom do you see in your reflection? Ask God today for ever-increasing heavenly wisdom from that word—and apply it in your thinking and living.
