Episode Transcription

This verse contains the antidote to despair, depression, and weariness. Christ warns His disciples about the many difficulties that would await them immediately after His departure. However, He gives them this magnificent promise, which has supported His followers throughout the whole history of the church.

Christ says that the disciples have an unshakeable foundation for boldness and courage in the face of affliction—Christ Himself and His victory. The source of true boldness is not to be found anywhere in the world or in the disciples themselves, but only in Christ and His completed work and victory over the world. The world is defeated and presents no spiritual danger for the redeemed.

Christ clearly hinted at the transient nature of all earthly affliction. Nothing, not even the worst possible trial a Christian can experience in this earthly life, can follow him into eternity. When you take a step back and consider this reality, it puts all trials in perspective.

Christ’s call comes to us as well. We must be courageous in the face of the dangers and afflictions in this world. Ponder the complete victory of Christ at Calvary. Look at all circumstances from the point of view of eternity—then nothing will be able to shake or destroy your faith.
