Paul is clear; money itself is not the problem, nor is it evil. The issue is how money directs our desire, and where it leads. The love of money is a root cause of evil. And, this root does not just lead to one evil, but all kinds of evil. This desire will lead us to shutting our hearts off to those in need, pursuing sinful practices, and worse—falsely believing that we are already blessed by God and that our actions actually please Him.
A person’s desire to be rich is actually a contempt for God’s present plan for their life. South Africa is plagued with “health and wealth” prosperity churches. Many are sucked into the vortex of this heresy, but what is worse is the plight of many young pastors who succumb to the multi-level marketing scheme of church ministry in order to enrich themselves, and are now outside the faith leading the charge against the true church.
What is the issue? This issue is one of contentment in God. God is good, and He is a rewarder. God is our treasure. Love of anything other than God Himself will create a lasting and gnawing unfulfilled craving. This leads to a crash of faith with no return. Endless wandering, looking for satisfaction, only leads to self-induced “piercings,” which are blamed on self and God.
