Declaring His Glory Among the Nations

January 19 — Do Not Let Sin Reign

Episode Summary

Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. — ROMANS 6:4

Episode Notes

This death occurred when they were baptized into Christ. Baptism into Christ involved union in His death, burial, and resurrection, so that believers would live new lives in the present time. The power of God accomplished the resurrection of Christ; this same power has brought believers, through union with Christ, into the new state of life. God’s purpose is that “we too might walk in newness of life.” We are to live a certain way as a result of dying and being buried with Christ.

Episode Transcription

As God’s children, we earnestly wait for the moment of our glorification, when we will be taken from the presence of sin and will enjoy the presence of our Savior forever. This hope gives us joy and strength for each new day. Yet we are often frustrated because we continue to sin, and seemingly have no power to stop it. For this reason, Paul encourages believers to consider the fact that they cannot live under the power of sin, for they have, in fact, died to its power.

Beloved, sin has no power over the child of God; through union with Christ, we are able to fight and overcome sin because it is no longer our master. Christ redeemed us from its slavery and made us free. Therefore, concludes Paul, do not let sin reign any longer in your bodies. Instead, present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, for such you are (Rom. 6:12–13).
