Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. — 1 TIMOTHY 3:8–10

Without them, the life of other leaders and the members of the church would be extremely difficult. Christ manifests His love to His church by sending it leaders who are called, and who, like Him, sacrifice themselves for its good.

If you read through First Timothy, it takes little effort to discern a crisis in the Ephesian church, which was directly connected to the activity of unworthy church leaders. The apostle Paul had warned about this earlier (Acts 20:28–30). Therefore, he is insisting that candidates for the ministry (elders and deacons) be carefully examined.
What is a deacon? The term used and the list of requirements presented point to the answer. He is a servant in the full sense of the word. That is, he is first of all a man who serves with humility. Secondly, he is spiritually mature. Thirdly, he is a man of gospel convictions. It is particularly important that the life of a deacon match his Christian convictions. His actions must not contradict his evangelical confession.

Remember that deacons—who are still sheep of Christ’s pasture—need prayer and encouragement from every other member of the church. Remembering this, spend time in prayer for the leaders of your church. Ponder how you might participate in the labor of God’s field together with them. Exercise yourself to answer the call to minister for the good of the church together with those, who equip you “for the work of service” (Eph. 4:12).
