Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. — 2 CORINTHIANS 9:13–14
Consider this definition of the gospel: God the Father sent the Son freely, generously, under no external coercion, in order to meet the needs of others. True Christian giving will follow a similar pattern. As we respond to the gospel, by imitating the character of God, it is important that we consider how we will participate in the ministry of giving, thereby manifesting the grace of God in our lives. It is our privilege to care for others, and to support God’s work, by offering up that with which we have been entrusted.

The topic of giving money is nearly always taboo in Christian circles. Perhaps the subject has acquired such a poor reputation due to the inappropriate manner in which it is frequently handled. However, the apostle Paul dealt with this difficult topic in a straightforward and honest manner. Despite any prior misgivings, believers must give due attention to God’s call to participate in the ministry of giving.
Paul reminded the Corinthian believers that their ministry of giving was actually evidence (“proof”) of their genuine relationship with Christ. The generous believer gives tangible testimony to the work of grace that has been wrought in his heart (2 Cor. 9:14). Further, the Corinthians’ giving was considered “obedience” to the gospel of Christ.

Ultimately, Christians have the assurance that their giving is not in vain. For faithful giving, to sound ministries, will produce “thanksgiving to God” (2 Cor. 9:12) and motivate others to glorify the name of Almighty God. If anyone needed a reason to give, he should look no further than these verses. Are you glorifying the Lord as He deserves with your giving? Soli Deo Gloria!
