If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 JOHN 1:9
Fortunately, God foresaw the way to liberation from sin: confession. The word “confess” means “to say the same thing, to agree.” To confess sin means to agree with God’s evaluation of sin, to acknowledge oneself as sinful and deserving of punishment.

Freedom from sin is one of the greatest needs in people’s lives. Sin deprives us of joy, brings feelings of guilt, and complicates our relationship with God. Sin makes us ineffective by creating obstacles for God’s effective working in and through us. Sin also inevitably destroys life by gradually weakening our resistance to temptation.
When we do not resist sin, the problem becomes worse. We fall into sin because we make mistakes. We sin because we are careless. We sin because we succumb to the deceptive promises of sin.
Fortunately, God foresaw the way to liberation from sin: confession. The word “confess” means “to say the same thing, to agree.” To confess sin means to agree with God’s evaluation of sin, to acknowledge oneself as sinful and deserving of punishment.
Yet, the confession of sin consists of another aspect. True confession is linked with the realization that the Son of God died on the cross for sin. The Christian’s sin is one of many which nailed the Son of God to the cross, where He bore the full weight of the punishment we deserved. Such knowledge saddens the heart of one who loves Christ, yet confession helps us realize that we have a basis on which to seek forgiveness from God—the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thus, John writes that He who is faithful and just grants forgiveness and cleanses us from all unrighteousness because the Son who died on the cross continues to intercede for us before the throne. Thank God today for the gift of true confession—and practice it regularly.
