Jesus’ final words to the disciples outlines a task that requires faithful service, substantial sacrifice, and supernatural help. The whole church inherits this project and must take it seriously. We may think the goal is only that the gospel would spread to all nations. But Jesus is specific. He commands his followers to make disciples, help them grow in Christlikeness, who then take on this task themselves.

Jesus outlines the means to “make disciples.” This requires baptizing them or calling them to identify with Christ and his followers in a public way upon hearing and believing the gospel with repentance from sin. It also requires “teaching” (Matt. 28:20). Jesus expects the church to undertake a comprehensive course of instruction that includes all Jesus has commanded. The formation of disciples in all nations requires a serious investment of time, energy, and resources from every member of his church. The goal is regeneration, obedience, and training of each new follower of Christ to participate in this task.

This project depends on both God’s saving work and the believer’s faithful service. It is far from over. Many cities throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Middle East lack an adequate number of Bible-believing churches. Many towns and villages throughout China, Honduras, Russia, Mexico, India, Spain, Malawi, Croatia, and the rest of the world are unreached with the gospel. What is your role? Will you commit to form disciples in your household and workplace? Will you go to the unreached? Will you invest in others to be trained to lead the church in this great task given by our risen and glorious Lord? Until all are formed …
