People in the world can try to please God in a variety of ways, but this verse claims that God can be pleased only through faith. The context of this verse, which carries the list of heroes of the Bible, proves that men and women gained approval from God through faith. This contradicts the popular saying, “seeing is believing.”
We must be reminded that our entry into the family of God took place through believing in God who saves by grace. Thereafter as children of God we are called to walk by faith in Him. What a privilege it is to hold His hand and walk, trusting Him, in the wilderness of our sojourning on earth!

But seeking God instead by faith through prayer no matter the difficulties—in times of sickness, financial difficulties, strained relationships, obstacles in ministry—brings Him delight.
When my plans for planting a church were recently shattered by events beyond my control, I was confronted by this verse to trust in God and move forward by faith. It is a solemn warning that shrinking back in faith would displease God. Unbelief can cause only additional pain to the misery, whereas your faith in God in the situation will be surely rewarded. How sweet it is to seek God always and taste His gracious provisions!
