“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. — ISAIAH 55:8
Has spiritual glaucoma eroded your vision? Has your attention been consumed by your circumstances in such a way that you have forgotten the full picture? Remember that God’s ways are not your ways—and be grateful for that! For who but God would have sent His only Son to die so that we might live? His ways are good. Keeping this in mind will prevent tunnel vision.

Glaucoma is an illness that causes the gradual loss of the eye’s peripheral vision, usually in an imperceptible way. When the illness is not dealt with properly, people who have the disease may come to have tunnel vision, whereby they can only see what is central to their field of view.
The people of Israel experienced something similar. Though God promised them certain blessings, they forgot them when trials came. Though God promised protection, they relied instead on the surrounding nations during crises. Though God continually provided for them, they were ever quick to look elsewhere. They focused on their circumstances while overlooking God’s glorious purposes in them. They were self-inflicted with spiritual glaucoma.
Sadly, Christians today are not much different. Like the Israelites before us, we tend to focus on the trials rather than on the God who stands above us. We tend to lean on our own understanding rather than to trust in God. But God wants us to know something: His thoughts are not our thoughts. They are far better, far higher, and far more pure. Similarly, God’s ways are not our ways. We will never understand everything about the trials we face, but we can trust in the God who stands above them.
