Declaring His Glory Among the Nations

June 22 — Our Greatest Comforter and Friend

Episode Summary

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. — HEBREWS 4:15

Episode Notes

What a comfort! In the midst of our failures in this life, God is to be our foremost comforter and friend. This is why the writer to the Hebrews writes in the next verse, “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16).

Episode Transcription

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is often difficult. Though we seek to manage our lives well, trying to obey all of God’s commands stretches us beyond our limits and exposes our weaknesses. It can sometimes feel like we are wet sponges with our sins being squeezed out of their concealment. This can be humiliating and disheartening and can cause us to crave sympathy.

Having a fellow believer to talk and pray with can be a great help. However, even the best friends can be limited in their understanding of how to help with our needs and limited in their ability to show compassion. This is not so with Christ our high priest. Having lived and died as a human being like us, He can sympathize with us because He understands our weaknesses and the difficulty of living in this fallen world. Yet unlike us, He never sinned. Hebrews 4:14 reminds us that He is also the Son of God who “passed through the heavens” and is now seated at the Father’s right hand. There, He lives to intercede for us (Heb. 7:25). So Christ’s sympathy is real because He is human, it is holy because He never sinned, and it is boundless because He is God.
