The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus as the suffering Servant of the Lord, and emphasizes the humanity of Jesus by using fourteen times the term “Son of Man.” This expression is a messianic title used by the prophet in Daniel 7:13, referring to the Messiah, Christ.
In our verse, Jesus uses this same expression, Son of Man, to emphasize His humility. He had just told His disciples that He would be rejected, suffer, be killed, and rise again after three days. Immediately following that, two of the disciples asked Jesus for the preeminent place in His kingdom (Mark 10:37), thereby demonstrating no understanding of the humility that must characterize a disciple of Jesus.
In Mark 10:45, Jesus concludes His teaching with a lesson of supreme humbleness. Jesus, the Son of God, did not come to be served but to serve, and this was going to result in His death. He was voluntarily giving away His life to pay the ransom for those who believed in Him, freeing them from the slavery of sin. With His death, He was satisfying the demands of justice and the wrath of God. Jesus was training His disciples to develop a mindset of humility and service, which opens the door for effective evangelism.
