Declaring His Glory Among the Nations

March 17 — The Commission of a Compassionate King

Episode Summary

Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” — MATTHEW 9:37–38

Episode Notes

Help our weak hearts, O Lord! Incline them to your words, even these words of compassion from Your beloved Son. Help us to behold the glories of our King, and to see His compassionate heart so that ours might be conformed to it. It is Your desire that workers be sent out into the harvest, please make it our desire, as well. Whether we go into the harvest or support others who go, may we reflect the compassionate heart of our King and Shepherd, Your Son Jesus Christ.

Episode Transcription

Here we have a window into the heart of God’s appointed King, the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ. Jesus’ compassion motivates Him to invite and exhort His disciples to participate in the ministry of saving lost souls. “Seeing the people,” Matthew writes of Jesus, “He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd” (Matt. 9:36). His love moves Him to action.

We need a heart like that of the King in order to see that the harvest is indeed great and that the workers are few, a heart like that of the King who went so far as to give His own life as a ransom for many. Only a heart of Christlike compassion will join in this work. An indifferent heart, unfeeling and cold, will not give as Jesus gave, will not see as He saw, will not speak to people about their needs as Jesus did, nor will it invite others to join the harvest work as Jesus has done.
