Episode Transcription

There is only one Lord who is over everything. In the context of this passage, Paul describes Jesus Christ as Lord over creation (Col 1:15), over all spiritual power (Col. 1:16), and as the eternal God and Sustainer of the universe (Col. 1:17). But here Paul goes further, and describes Jesus Christ as the only one who has the right and power to rule the church. Just as the body receives orders, coordination, and growth from the head, so the church is dependent on Christ. The church is a body that cannot die, for it has its origin, foundation, and permanent life in Jesus Christ, who rose again and will live forevermore.

There are many churches today that claim to be subject to Christ, but which in practice prefer to obey their traditions, emotions, or founding fathers. But Christ is the head of the church, and He rules and nourishes His church through His word. For this reason, every local church must have as its highest priority the study, practice, and proclamation of Christ’s word (Col. 3:16), so that its development and practice may be according to Him, its only rightful head.

If the body does not obey its head’s instruction, development and productivity are hindered. In the same way, a church that does not listen to Christ’s word cannot fulfill His purposes. But when a church lives in subjection to the Scriptures, it reflects the rule of Christ and is effective in accomplishing all that He desires.

How do you arrange your daily routine? If you want to make sure that Christ reigns in your life, make sure that you listen to His word.
