For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. — EPHESIANS 6:12
We are called to stand firm, and we can only stand firm if our minds are filled with truth. This is the only way we can identify and defeat the schemes of the forces of darkness. We must follow Jesus’ example when He was tempted by the devil (Luke 4:1–13). Let us fight with our minds filled with truth, for it is all-out war.

Many people today do not think there is a spiritual dimension. Many believe that the battle between good and evil is just something we see in movies. The devil loves that many people think this way. Yet, the Bible tells us that there is an intense struggle between spiritual truth and the spiritual forces of wickedness, and part of the devil’s strategy is to keep people ignorant of or indifferent to such a struggle.
In Paul’s letter to the believers at Ephesus, he is encouraging them to live in a manner worthy of their calling; this means to live according to the spiritual blessings they have in Jesus. But Paul knows the schemes of our enemy, and he wants to prepare them for the battle against the devil’s powers.
This struggle is a “face-to-face” battle. Paul uses a word that refers to a fight between two people, until one hurls the other down and holds him down. The image is quite clear: the devil tries to hurl us down so that we don’t stand firm in our faith. We face a powerful enemy, and not of flesh and blood. The fight starts and must be fought in the mind, for that is where our battle begins.
