The Beatitudes of Matthew 5 are memorable for their teaching, yet sadly they are regularly misunderstood. Far from giving nice principles to live by, Jesus is declaring the necessary evidence of the kind of person who will be part of His kingdom. It is a portrait of a true kingdom citizen.
In the second Beatitude, there are three words that are important to understand. The first word is the first word of the verse, blessed. This describes someone who has received divine favor, someone who is blessed spiritually. In other words, it is describing someone who has been saved by God and has His favor on them.
The second important word helps narrow who is the person who will receive divine favor. It is the person who mourns and does so over their sinful state. It is a person who mourns that they are spiritually bankrupt because they have recognized they are poor in spirit. This mourning is at the heart level, as there is sorrow over sin that has been committed against God.
The third important word is comforted. Jesus promises that the person who truly mourns over his sin and looks to God for salvation will find forgiveness, and in finding forgiveness will be comforted. This means that there will be relief and freedom spiritually.
Bringing all words together, it means that the person who is heartbroken and expresses sorrow for his sin before the Lord will receive freedom from God’s wrath, and comfort in finding salvation.
