The past influences the present. Few would argue with this statement. Lay a good foundation in the beginning and it will help you avoid problems today. Make a mess of things in your youth, and you may hobble through the rest of your life. The principle of reaping what you sow is well-founded and illustrated in Scripture.

However, there is another principle in Scripture: the future influences the present. The Bible has many times parted the curtains of the future in order to influence people living in the present. The foundation of what God promises to His children in the future profoundly influences their lives in the present. Scripture is filled with verses revealing the tremendous blessing of heaven in the future for those who love God in the present.

James writes of a promised blessing for those who endure difficulties in the present, because in the future they will be rewarded with the crown of life. We need to love this promise and rely on it every day as we walk by faith. This truth helps us get through the difficulties of the present by relying on God’s promises. They help us see beyond the problems, the anxieties, and the pain.

Let’s be attentive to Scripture and persevere under trial in order to receive the crown of life and escape the chains of death. Let’s remember in the present God’s promises about the future. May they fortify your faith and fan the flame of your love for Him.
