Episode Transcription

This verse is short but contains a massive truth. It is presented by Jesus as a condition. If the first part of the sentence is true, then the second part will also be true. If we love Him, we will keep His commandments. Love and obedience are inseparable. Where there is no obedience, there is no love. Where there is love, there is obedience.

There is a simple yet profound way that this works. We obey Christ because we love Him. And we love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). Therefore, for the sake of our own obedience, it is critical to grow in our understanding of His love for us. As we meditate on the gospel, as we cherish the good news of great joy for all people, and as we contemplate the matchless love of Christ Jesus, it generates love that results in obedience. So, we need to go to God daily and meditate upon His perfect love, which shines brightest in the sacrifice of our Savior. In Christ we come to understand love; in Christ we come to radiate that love as it is produced in us by God’s Spirit. And as a result, we come to obey His commandments.

Take time each day to remember how God has loved you. Let this be your motivation to lovingly obey all that Christ commands.
