Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. — MATTHEW 5:10
And, if you suffer persecution as a result, our Lord Jesus Christ wants us all to know that this brings great blessing. In fact, the very kingdom of heaven awaits such as these. I live in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Every day I witness different forms of persecution toward those who mention God’s name, confess Jesus as Lord, or simply carry a Bible. Some of the more serious forms of this persecution include domestic violence, assault, kidnapping, violent theft, and even murder. In addition, church services have recently been the object of attacks by crooked people who don’t want to know anything about the kingdom of heaven. These circumstances weigh heavily on the church, making it challenging to be God’s message-bearers of salvation and hope.
Throughout history, many have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, losing material goods, families, and even their own lives. Today, as well, many have decided to follow and honor Christ in spite of the consequences. The church keeps opening its doors, the Bible continues to be taught, and the preaching of the gospel is reaching farther than ever. If you’re willing to live a godly life or valiantly share the gospel, at some point you will likely be persecuted (2 Tim. 3:12).
And, if you suffer persecution as a result, our Lord Jesus Christ wants us all to know that this brings great blessing. In fact, the very kingdom of heaven awaits such as these. If you are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, let your heart be encouraged, for yours is the kingdom of heaven.
